May 27 – June 2, 2012 is National Hurricane Preparedness Week and Rockingham Insurance would like to remind people living in areas where hurricanes are a potential threat to be prepared.   Hurricane season starts on June 1 and ends on November 30.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts a normal year for hurricanes with nine to 15 storms in the Atlantic Ocean.   They also stated, four to eight could become storms with winds of 74 mph or higher, and three storms becoming major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.

How to prepare:

  • Know your evacuation routes – Plan and prepare for evacuation for a major hurricane.
  • Know the location of potential shelters – Contact your local Red Cross chapter for information on emergency centers.
  • Prepare an emergency kit – According to the Red Cross, you should have at least one gallon of water per person, per day, flashlight, extra batteries, battery powered radio, first aid kit, medications, infant supplies, cell phone, extra cell phone chargers, cash, blankets, and emergency contact information.
  • Keep supplies to secure your property – Have plyboard and nails to cover windows and doors.  Make sure you bring in any chairs or other items you keep outside that could be picked up an thrown by high winds.

Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Take time to prepare and have an evacuation plan before you encounter an emergency.
